The Salvation Army’s Ring the Town Red Campaign

2015: Vince reported back that we raised $690.14 ringing bells this year.

2016: Our Bell Ringing efforts raised $1,715.90. Awesome effort!

Dear Vince,

Thank you for your support of The Salvation Army’s Ring the Town Red Campaign which is part of the total Tree of Lights Campaign for Omaha.  You may have already heard that, through the generosity of our community, The Salvation Army in Omaha exceeded its $2.5 million Tree of Lights goal.  More than $150,000 was also raised in Council Bluffs.

We could not reach our fundraising goal without volunteer bell ringers, like the Kiwanis Club of Greater Omaha, who graciously give of their time.  100% of every dollar you helped collect goes directly to our Human Needs Fund.  The fund supports year round social service programs including: housing, food, youth development, behavioral health, older adult services, material assistance and anti-human trafficking.   For more information on any of these programs visit www.salarmyomaha.org.

Your group efforts assisted in raising $ 1715.9 during your 24 hours of volunteerism.  Thank you again for your gift of time during the 2016 Tree of Lights Campaign!

Speaker: Special Olympics

Special Olympics – Sports, Health, Education

Sports – we know but this helps the athletes with their health. Providing tools and help with their health. This includes health screenings and check ups. The other aspect is Healthy Habits.
Special Olympics also help educators understand special ed kids.
Serve 5,000 athletes. Goal is 10,000. That is still only 20% of potential participants in Nebraska.
Special Olympics is a community of parents who help each other.
Thanks Carolyn, Dave and Sandi for all the interesting information about Special Olympics.

Speaker: Joe Vetro PhD

Joe works in Nanotechnology Medicine. He is an associate professor in Pharmacuetical Sciences. And works in RNA interference therapy of cancer.
Nanotechnology is the creation of a useful device or system at the nano scale. The nano scale is very small. A drug is around 1 nanometer. Virus is a nano size. The size range of nano is talking to the size of the technology.
Pharmacotherapy is use of drugs that produce beneficial effects. Prevent, cure, stop or slow progression, or reduce or eliminate clinical symptoms.
There are many delivery systems for nano Pharmacueticals. The researchers are looking at the actual material, release mechanism, and how to get the medicine to the right area of the body.
UNMC also works with animals. Production animals and pets helps the scientist learn how nanomedicines react in a complex environment.

Thank you, Joe, for all the interesting information (and keeping it at a layman level).

May Meeting Notes

Speaker: Officer Charlie Moffitt

Officer Charlie Moffitt gave an enjoyable presentation of the Omaha Police Department’s Canine
Unit.  Raised in California and studying marine biology he gravitated to Omaha around 2002 to join the canine unit.  OPD uses German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois and Labs.
There are over 60 dog teams in the area.  The dogs are 18-24 months when they are brought for training.  The dogs are “green”, meaning not trained when they join the OPD.  The dogs can sniff out over 1000 different odors and are particularly adept at detecting drugs.  The dogs are trained to meet guidelines of the International Police Conference so can be outsourced anywhere in the world if needed.
The dogs cost about $10,000.  The service life of the dogs is about 8 years at which time they are retired; in some cases then domesticated.  Officer Mollitt is responsible for training dogs both for OPD as well as for agencies in states surrounding Nebraska.  He presented interesting videos showing drugs and cash captured by OPD as part of the drug interdiction program.
Thanks to Kip Squire for bring Officer Mollitt to our Kiwanis Club.

Key Leader Sponsorship

To my follow Kiwanians,

Below is a letter I received yesterday from Matt – a teenage that I sponsored for Key Leader last weekend.  It is a testimony to the impact that Kiwanis can have on kids.  It is my hope that Key Leader is something our club can get behind and sponsor at least 2 kids next year.

Speaker: OWH Reporter Todd Cooper

Omaha World Herald court reported Todd Cooper gave a behind-the-scenes story of Quentin Jackson and Nikko Jenkins and how his discovery of the early release of Jackson led to a full scale investigation of the parole and early release scandal that continues to make headlines today.  Todd’s story began in May when a prosecuting attorney was dismayed that Jackson was out on a pre-parole parole; before the terms of his incarceration had concluded.  Todd followed the trail discovering over 800 cases of similar inmates; over 300 of whom had already been released.

Check out Todd’s stories in the world Herald.
