Speaker: Abide

Josh from Abide came to inspire our Kiwanis Club.

Abide is a mission in North Omaha that works with people to create a stronger, safer community.

Abide now has 31 Lighthouses. Homes around North Omaha that families now live in. Homes that Abide rehabilitated with help of local vendors to keep costs in line.

Abide also hosts block parties to bring together families in the community so they know each other and have an opportunity to meet and socialize.

Josh grew up in a family of 14 kids. To get out of the house and his neighborhood, Josh worked for a basketball scholarship with Creighton. After he tore his ACL, Josh lost his basketball dream but found a new life with his wife and moved back to North Omaha.

Speaker: Hope Center for Kids

Brenda Block, development director and interim executive director, spoke about the mission of the Hope Center for Kids.
She showed videos of the Hope Center in action and concluded with a fun video of current UNO student that went through the Hope Center, following his journey through the years, the people who influenced him and the kids he in turn influenced.
The Hope Center has seen a dramatic increase in kids served, from 75 only 5 years ago to over 250 today and now has a center in Fremont that partners with the Fremont Family YMCA.  The center needs over 65 volunteers each week to work alongside the staff.  She particularly emphasized the Employment Academy that trains kids how to be successful not only as students but also as future employees in the work force.
A weekly stipend is paid to students and 2 out of state college visits are provided for kids enrolled in the academy.  The Center is a partner with 9 other agencies in the Step Up summer program that sponsors jobs for kids.
Thank you, Brenda, for educating our Kiwanis Club on all you do for our kids.

Speaker : TSA Nebraska

Kathy Bogus with the TSA Nebraska and Paul from Omaha Eppley is our Kiwanis speakers today.

TSA is more than airports. TSA is all transportation – air, rail, roads, ports and pipeline. But airports are about 80% of TSA’s time and resources. There are about 300 employees in Nebraska, 200 in Omaha.

The vetting process begins as soon as the airplane reservation begins.

International packages are tracked coming into the U.S.

The Advanced Imaging Technology actually does not detect medical implants. Better than the metal detectors. Pregnant women should check the website and heart implant patients should check with their doctor.

Speaker: NE Organ Recovery

Tom Neal, Nebraska Organ Recovery is the PR Coordinator.

Every 19 minutes an organ is transplanted. Every 10 minutes another patient is added to the list.

There are 500 Nebraskans on the waiting list. And – only 54% of the eligible Nebraskans are registered as donors. National average is 48% of registered donors have taken the step of being registered.

Thank you, Tom, for all the information.

The project went state-wide in 1997 with now over 130 chapters.
Currently TeamMates is joining forces with the Empowerment Network to concentrate on 6th graders in north Omaha zip code 68111 to match mentors with black students.

Speaker – DIBS for Kids

April 27
DIBS – For Kids
Dave Orrick

What prevents teachers from sending books home? Would parents read?
What would the benefits be?
How to make that financially possible?
Dave started Delivering Infinite Bookshelves for Kids.
Delivering books to low income families in Omaha to increase their learning. By the third grade, studies can predict the success of students by the amount of reading they do. Literacy by third grade is crucial.
Dave is organizing the program so para teachers can administrate the program.
Send books home , every night. Follow up the next day with questions about the story.

It took $15000 to put books in just one school. Dave is expanding to another school in August. He wants to be in 5 schools as quickly as possible.
Thanks Dave for all the interesting information.

Omaha Keep Kids Alive Drive 25

The national campaign , Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 started in Omaha over 17 years ago.

Tom Everson, President is our speaker today.

FiFirst step is trying to be part of the solution. 29% of accidents are from lack of space management. This is driven by the use of cell phones. Cell phone use is distracting, creates tunnel vision and causes accidents.
Signage and garbage can stickers help with community awareness and documented studies show speeds reduce.
April 18 is the walk/run to honor people injured in traffic accidents. Happens on Omaha on the Papio trail.
Live Forward and Run to Remember. A run that Tom participates in that runs to the top of Pikes Peak.
Thanks Tom for the great info.

Speakers: Boystown

Herb and Tony came to speak about Boystown.
Tony was born in Detriot to a mother that was on drugs and was a prostitute. Tony and his 2 brothers ended up living with their grandmother. At age 12, Tony lost his grandmother. A local priest found them a home at Boystown.  One brother knew who his biological father was and went to live with him.
Tyrone went on to graduate and spent his career in the army.
Tony graduated Boystown and then UNO  He and his wife became family teachers over 20 years ago. They now have boys of their own plus currently 8 kids in their family home.
The third brother is serving in prison.
Thank you Herb and Tony for the inspiration.
