Plan on Monday!!!

Bucky is our premier Kiwanis speaker liner-upper…

Come Monday, 8/31 to hear  UNMC Professor Joe Vetro.

The New World of Nano Technology

Bring a guest for this interesting talk.

Speaker: Betsy Flood, UNMC Biocontainment Unit

Elizabeth Flood, RN, BSN, CPEN

The Nebraska Biocontainment Unit at UNMC in Omaha
Why Nebaska?
Began in 2005 with various news stories about SARS and monkey flu. It’s a partnership with UNMC and the state of Nebraska.
The unit is isolated by entrances and elevators. The changing rooms have garments from under wear to scrubs. Air handling is separate. And waste disposal.  Linens are the discards from the hospital, dyed blue, and burned after use.
How contagious? And how to isolate?
Ebola is not as contagious as other diseases but is generally deadly.
Ebola is contagious when symptoms are present. And fluids remain contagious after death.
Ebola vaccine is showing promise. The virus has not been as prevalent in Africa.

Speaker: Farmer Veteran Coalition

Chet with the Farmers Veteran Coalition is our kiwanis speaker.

The Mission – mobilize veterans to feed America.
Chet came home from the Marines and found reintegration to be a challenge. So he sought a way to heal through working with veterans to build their dreams.
20% of the population lives in rural areas but 41% are military. Veterans are experiencing high unemployment. Farmers are aging out. There is a strong workforce of vets to take on the challenge of farming.

Chet’s skill set is financial. He works with vets to set up the business plan, financing, and money planning.
Look for the “Homegrown by Heroes” label.

Speaker : TSA Nebraska

Kathy Bogus with the TSA Nebraska and Paul from Omaha Eppley is our Kiwanis speakers today.

TSA is more than airports. TSA is all transportation – air, rail, roads, ports and pipeline. But airports are about 80% of TSA’s time and resources. There are about 300 employees in Nebraska, 200 in Omaha.

The vetting process begins as soon as the airplane reservation begins.

International packages are tracked coming into the U.S.

The Advanced Imaging Technology actually does not detect medical implants. Better than the metal detectors. Pregnant women should check the website and heart implant patients should check with their doctor.

Speaker – DIBS for Kids

April 27
DIBS – For Kids
Dave Orrick

What prevents teachers from sending books home? Would parents read?
What would the benefits be?
How to make that financially possible?
Dave started Delivering Infinite Bookshelves for Kids.
Delivering books to low income families in Omaha to increase their learning. By the third grade, studies can predict the success of students by the amount of reading they do. Literacy by third grade is crucial.
Dave is organizing the program so para teachers can administrate the program.
Send books home , every night. Follow up the next day with questions about the story.

It took $15000 to put books in just one school. Dave is expanding to another school in August. He wants to be in 5 schools as quickly as possible.
Thanks Dave for all the interesting information.

March Speaker Recap

We have had the privilege of great speakers this spring. We thank all the speakers for the excellent information.

Mary Crosby: Bethlehem House
Gave an inspirational message about women in crisis going through pregnancy; some coming off of abandonment and drug abuse.  Bethlehem House provides support during and after pregnancy to women who are homeless nut who choose life for their child.  Bethlehem House – not a shelter but a home.  info@bethlehemhouseomaha.orgwww.bethlehemhouseomaha.org

Deepak Khazanchi: Associate dean – Academic Affairs – UNO College of IST
Gave an informative talk about the scarcity of qualified IT people not only in our community but nationwide.  Rod Muench has organized a visit by the 8th grade class of sacred Heart to tour the UNO facility on Tuesday, April 14.  Look under upcoming events for details.

A Sister representing the Sisters of Mercy presented the history of the organization; now celebrating 150 years of service in Omaha.  Interesting because this service preceded Nebraska statehood.  Visit the exhibit at the Durham until April 12.  Particularly interesting was the role the sisters played in the development and its continuing contribution to the history of Omaha.  Think of all the buildings in Omaha and Omaha that have “Mercy” attached to them.

Tim Schmad: The Omaha Community Playhouse.
Gave the past and present status of the Playhouse; from its humble beginnings in 1925 to its modern-day contribution to the performing arts in our community.  Check out the World Herald article of March 30.

Keith “Sparky” Clark: All-Play and the Children’s Miracle Baseball League

Keith presented the All-Play plans at the Division 20 meeting on March 4.  He challenged all Division 20 clubs to step-to-the-plate and volunteer this summer at the All-Play facility.  He also presented a challenge for clubs to sponsor a team for $500.  Our club’s Board of Directors voted to sponsor a club.

Speaker for Monday!

Monday, February 23

Bob Danenhauer
Supervisor of Physical Education and Athletics, Omaha Public Schools
  Omaha Sports Commission

Athletics has been able to flourish due to a strong relationship and even stronger partnership among the student athletes, coaches, administration, parents, and the community. We all share the commonly held belief that the authentic experiences offered by athletic competition will be an extension of classroom learning. Moreover, it is important that our athletic program instill in student athletes a positive character that is displayed during times of adversity as well as during times of success.
Our goal is to motivate student athletes to have a strong commitment to academics.  Coaches are encouraged to monitor academic grade reports and consider procedures for providing academic help for athletes facing academic challenges.  The Academic Coaches Program is an excellent example of the athletic department’s commitment to support student athletes. We want our students to understand that successes in athletics and academics provide a basis for successful life-long experiences.
In addition to involving the entire community in athletics, The Omaha Public Schools is committed to using student athletics as an extension of the classroom and a venue to inspire learning. Student athletes have to learn to overcome adversity throughout the practices and contests of a given season. Learning how to overcome adversity is a significant learning process and will improve the student athlete’s academic success. Most research points to student athletes as having successful careers and academic success in college and beyond. Our vision for athletics includes the need to stress the learning process of the contest over the value of winning and losing.

Mad Dads

Sundiata Menelik spoke about Mad Dads.
His first wife was a recording artist. They lived in Minneapolis. This is where he first became active in community activism. He worked to clean up crack neighborhoods and rebuild.
Sundiata returned to Omaha after his mother passed. He came back and has taken over the Mad Dads chapter.

Speaker: UNO’s Jerry Deichert

Mr. Deichert at UNO speaking on “Selected Demographic Information for the Omaha Area”.
Cocktail party trivia – 320 is the median population of the “cities” in Nebraska.
53% of Nebraska population is in the three counties – Douglas, Lancaster, and Sarpy. These also experienced the most growth.
Doulas county grew 11.5% but Hispanic population grew 86.9%. Sarpy grew 29.6% with Hispanic grew 115.9%.
Thanks Jerry for all the interesting information.
