Speaker: Fix the Debt

Jack Heidel spoke on the subject ‘Fix the Debt’ to our Kiwanis Club.  He graphically illustrated the dilemma of fixing the national debt.  In 2014 the USA had a $half-trillion deficit.  Interest on the debt was 7% in 2014 but  projected to increase to 16% by 2030 and 20% by 2050.  Medicare/Medicaid alone comprises nearly 50% of total spending so the continued need to provide health care coverage is challenging any solution to the national debt.  Jack has no solution but was simply stating the facts urging us to contact our representatives to find a solution.

Omaha Chamber of Commerce

Andy is part of the economic development team. Growing the entire area, not just Omaha.

The partnership includes having offices in downtown.

Andy works with business from all around the country looking at this area to locate.

Prosper Omaha is the current fundraising campaign. $23 million is the target. Retention, expanding,  enterpruership, and moving.   Target are agricultural,  military,  financial,  and more to be added.

Andy works finding local incentives to match up with the needs of that company.

Our business climate needs an industrial park. Need to focus on redevelopment of Eastern Omaha. Brand management. And legislation.

Talent development is important. Attraction and retention.

Thanks Andy for the update on new business development in Omaha.

Alegent: Tanzania Project

Sally Carlson is in charge of the pastoral program for Alegent Creighton. She recently went to Tanzania for the ACH Tanzania Initiative.

Her mission was to find how the projects are doing now and to determine other mission sites.

They partnered with one hospital and are looking for ways to improve. Over 11 years, there is a orthopaedic area, nursing school and dipensery. Equipment that has been decommissioned from ACH has been shipped over to provide XRAY’s, beds, medicine,  etc.

The nursing school has 300 enrollment.  Both men and women are allowed in the dorms – which is unusual in the other schools in Africa.  It costs about $1,500 per year. Which is about one year salary. About 92% passed the nursing exam the first class through the school.

There is a trip a year to Tanzania.  It costs about $5000 and a small group of 7-12.

Thanks Sally for all the information.

Message from Joe Grier regarding Monday’s speaker

Please see Joe’s message regarding our special guests Monday.

Brian can I get a web blast to encourage all to come to the meeting on Monday.  The speaker is going to talk about how her and her husband (Tom Hoarty – used to be a member of the Club) went to Spain last year and walked over 450 miles on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage road.

Can you also turn the meeting over to her as soon as you can on Monday, I’d like to give her as much time as possible.

Margaret Hoarty and her husband spent six weeks late in the summer of 2012 walking the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage road in Spain. Over the 450 mile trek, they prayed and walked and met other pilgrims from around the world.

A Message from the President

As we begin a new Kiwanis year this week I would like to take a moment and thank our outgoing board members and officers for their service to the club.  First, thank you Deb Rost for serving the club as a board member for the past 2 years.  Deb is one of those quiet workers that has served Kiwanis at many levels and knows more about Kiwanis than I ever will!  I would like to thank Dan Pleiss for his work over the past 2 years as treasurer and board member.  I can tell you Dan’s accounting skills are second to none and he has our financial reporting process in great shape.  Finally a big thank you to Kip Squire for his contribution to the club as our secretary for the past 2 years.  Kip has been the person behind the scenes keeping us in compliance with the Kiwanis mother ship!  And since he can’t get enough, Kip has stepped up for a 2 year term on the board!!

Your board is currently working on the budgeting process for the upcoming year and will have a final document ready to approve at the October 16th board meeting.  We welcome any input from the membership regarding the budgeting process.

Thank you.
