New Kiwanis District Secretary

My Fellow Kiwanians:
As most of you know Frank Murphy our District Secretary-Treasurer is retiring September 30, 2015. Frank has done an outstanding job; he has been the continuity and the glue that have held this district together for the last 7 years. I want to personally thank Frank for the great job as District Secretary and for making this transition easier!
I would like to introduce myself. My name is Barb O’Donnell; I belong to the Bellevue AM Club. It is my honor to try and fill Frank’s shoes as the incoming District Secretary-Treasurer.   I have been a Kiwanian since 2008 and have held several offices, including Lt Governor, in my short time as a Kiwanian. I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to have this position and promise you all that I will work hard to make this a smooth transition and to serve your needs in the years to come.
A little bit about me – I am married to my wonderful hubby Bill. I have four grown children and 11 grandchildren, 7 boys and 4 girls. Some of my hobbies are golf and making custom greeting cards. I make birthday cards and Christmas cards for all of Bill’s clients. For my Kiwanis Club each member gets a card designed just for them on their Kiwanis Anniversary, our President writes a personalized note and then gives the card to the member. It has been a fun tradition.
The office email is NIKiwanisDistrict “@” gmail.com.
In Kiwanis service,

Speaker: Joe Vetro PhD

Joe works in Nanotechnology Medicine. He is an associate professor in Pharmacuetical Sciences. And works in RNA interference therapy of cancer.
Nanotechnology is the creation of a useful device or system at the nano scale. The nano scale is very small. A drug is around 1 nanometer. Virus is a nano size. The size range of nano is talking to the size of the technology.
Pharmacotherapy is use of drugs that produce beneficial effects. Prevent, cure, stop or slow progression, or reduce or eliminate clinical symptoms.
There are many delivery systems for nano Pharmacueticals. The researchers are looking at the actual material, release mechanism, and how to get the medicine to the right area of the body.
UNMC also works with animals. Production animals and pets helps the scientist learn how nanomedicines react in a complex environment.

Thank you, Joe, for all the interesting information (and keeping it at a layman level).

Speaker: Howard E Gendelman,MD

Dr Gendelman started school to become a spy. He studied Russian in school. He went on to work in Isreal.

He then became a Doctor. But after a time he began to study neuroscience at John Hopkins. He finished his education as part of the Army. He spent many years  in the chemical warfare area.

Before his retirement, he spent time in Dessert Storm. Once he retired he returned to NYC but was recruited to Omaha.

He moved to Omaha in 1991.

Dr Gendelman began working in Alzheimer’s, MS and Parkinson’s disease research. In NE, we live statistically 8 years longer than people that live on NYC. Because we live longer we are experiencing more of these diseases.

The double blind research study is just completing and getting ready for publication.  It’s taken 16 years to research, test and human test through the FDA to find a treatment for these diseases.

In the next few months the study will be fully released and we will be very excited to see the full results.

Thank you, Dr Gendelman for the education on these diseases.

Speaker : Robert Cryne

Iraq: The Neighborhood, Then and Now

Retired in 2014. And is now practicing law in Omaha and teaching at Bellevue University.
Islam began in Saudi Arabia. 632 AD when The Prophet passed but not any of his sons survived to adulthood. This began the splits into sects.

Speaker : inCommon Community Development

Christian Gray, inCommon Commnity Development.

Key Ideas: unite and strengthen neighborhoods. You are a product of your environment.
Park Avenue neighborhood is the current focus. 1 in 3 people in the area earn below the poverty line.

There has been a huge increase in poverty in the U.S.

Neighborhood development gets to the root of issues. InCommon built a community center 2 years ago in Park Ave area. Gives a “front door” to the people in the area.

Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) – who are they? Started with churches organized into Neighbors United. Foster relationships with community meals, Zumba, job training programs, and setting up a recycling business to employ people.
Civic Power + Social Change
Thank you, Christian, for sharing your mission with Greater Omaha Kiwanis.

Speaker: Hope Center for Kids

Brenda Block, development director and interim executive director, spoke about the mission of the Hope Center for Kids.
She showed videos of the Hope Center in action and concluded with a fun video of current UNO student that went through the Hope Center, following his journey through the years, the people who influenced him and the kids he in turn influenced.
The Hope Center has seen a dramatic increase in kids served, from 75 only 5 years ago to over 250 today and now has a center in Fremont that partners with the Fremont Family YMCA.  The center needs over 65 volunteers each week to work alongside the staff.  She particularly emphasized the Employment Academy that trains kids how to be successful not only as students but also as future employees in the work force.
A weekly stipend is paid to students and 2 out of state college visits are provided for kids enrolled in the academy.  The Center is a partner with 9 other agencies in the Step Up summer program that sponsors jobs for kids.
Thank you, Brenda, for educating our Kiwanis Club on all you do for our kids.
